The people suffering from depression turned out to be the most egocentric

Members of the Research Institute of Physiology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences used electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRT) to find out that brain default mode network is more active in patients with clinical depression in a state of passive rest than in subjects who do not have the diagnosis. The scientific article is published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

The brain default mode network (DMN) is a neural network which is active at times when an individual does not perform any mental and physical tasks. The task-positive mode network (TPN) «turns on» when an individual is facing a task.

Scientists have studied both the brains of subjects who are healthy and of those who suffer from clinical depression. It turned out that DMN in patients suffering from depression works more actively than in healthy people. This means that capability to process information about the outside world is decreased in people in a state of depression, because they think first and foremost about themselves and the nearest objects most associated with them.

If the results are confirmed, there will be hope that it is possible to alleviate depression by using methods of cognitive-behavioural therapy.
