Russian scientists have obtained crystals for medicine, oil industry, and defence industry

Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg scientists for the first time in Russia have obtained and researched crystals of potassium titanyl phosphate (PTP); lasers, which are based on them, can be used to diagnose gas and oil leaks, as well as in medicine and the defence industry, reported the press service of the Novosibirsk State University (NSU).

«PTP crystals have advanced nonlinear optical and electro-optical properties, thanks to which they are used for <> high-power laser radiation. [Radiation sources] based on periodic structures made of PTP operate in the middle infrared range and are of great practical interest: absorption bands of poisonous and explosive substances are also of this range, consequently, such lasers can be used to diagnose leaks of natural gas and oil from pipelines, as well as in medicine and the defence industry,» the message says.

The crystals were obtained and studied in Russia for the first time, with scientists from the Ural Federal University, the Novosibirsk State University, and the Institute of Thermophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences taking part in the research. The crystals had previously been being produced in France, Israel, and Sweden.
