Archaeologists discovered in Taman a crypt of members of the elite of ancient Fanagoria

The Fanagorian archaeological expedition have discovered a crypt dating to the IIIrd century BC during the excavations on the outskirts of settlement Primorsky in the Taman peninsula. About 10 people are buried in it, presumably members of one rich family, said Vladimir Kuznetsov, the head of the expedition.

There was a temple of Aphrodite Apatura of the Heaven, patroness of the city, famous throughout the ancient Greek world, on the beach near Fanagoria. The temple is mentioned in the works by ancient Greek historian and geographer Strabo. Modern scientists have not yet been able to locate the temple; presumably it was built somewhere to the west of the ancient city, in the vicinity of modern village of Primorsky. However, several indirect evidence of its location have been found.

«At some distance from Fanagoria, the researchers of its necropolis found and explored the tomb of representatives of the elite of the city, possibly members of the priestly estate. It is likely that the finding of a prestigious sepulchre on the seashore in close proximity to the boundaries of the settlement west of Fanagoria indirectly confirms the hypothesis about the location of the world-famous temple of Aphrodite Apatur,» Kuznetsov said.
