Tomsk scientists learned to track metal corrosion through concrete layer

Researchers from Tomsk Polytechnic University and Tomsk State University have come up with a new approach for searching for defects in reinforced concrete constructions. The suggested method combines inductive heating of a carcass through the concrete and following IR investigation. The technique has been already tested on crucially essential constructions of Transsib. The corresponding article has been published in the Applied Sciences.

For troubleshooting, the researchers have suggested heating the backbones by imposing a current. Using special devices, one might observe the irradiation of heat from the backbones. The rust does not conduct the current and, therefore, can be found out.

The amount of reinforced concrete constructions in Russia inherited from the Soviet period is still quite large and will serve at least until the end of XXI century. That is why the diagnostics of reinforced concrete will also be demanded in future.
