Construction of synchrotron in Novosibirsk will start in 2019

The construction of a powerful source of synchrotron radiation will commence in Novosibirsk in 2019 and is expected to be completed in five years, said Gennady Kulipanov, an adviser to the Directorate of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The source of synchrotron radiation based at INP SB RAS in Novosibirsk will become a part of the national megaproject ISSI-4 at the Kurchatov Institute. Synchrotron radiation is used in many scientific fields: from the study of structure of materials to cancer cell therapy and the study of new pharmaceutical preparations. The project is estimated at 40 billion rubles; the source itself will cost 20 billion and the same amount will be spent on user stations.

«The construction of synchrotron is planned to be started in 2019 and it [should] be ready in five years. It will expand during five years: there will be 10 output channels and 10 stations at first, and later 32 output channels and the same number of stations — it takes a lot of time to master the radiation,» Kulipanov said. The new specialised source of synchrotron radiation is called SKIF.
