A cheap way to produce fertilizers that detain heavy metal particles was found in Siberia

Novosibirsk scientists have developed a method of obtaining fertilizers to combat loss of fertile soil (desertification), which is five times cheaper than the existing ones. Additionally, it helps protect plants in cities from particles of heavy metals, said Igor Lomovsky, acting head of a laboratory at the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISSC SB RAS).

The fertilizers obtained from peat, besides the conservation of fertile soils and assistance to agriculture, can also be used to improve cities — they work as traps for heavy metals that accumulate in the soil, said Lomovsky

«We have successfully carried out research on sites where heavy metals fall out due to exhaust fumes, dust, and litter. The fertilizers accumulate harmful substances on themselves thus allowing grass to grow. And every 10 cm of grass mean half as much dust,» Lomovsky explained.

The scientists are now planning to supply fertilizers to Uzbekistan to combat desertification. Raw materials for the production of the fertilizers are provided by the Kuzbass company.
