Russian scientists have found a way to predict caries by analysing saliva

Experts from Voronezh State University and Voronezh State Medical University with the help of colleagues from Australia have found out what substances are present in the saliva of people affected by caries. They also developed a biomaterial identical in composition to the enamel of healthy teeth. A scientific article is published in the EMPA Journal. The work is supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation.

Russian researchers have analysed how the composition of saliva varies in the course of development of caries, and found that as the caries develops in humans, the proportion of organic substances in saliva increases, while the share of inorganic (mineral) ones decreases.

The authors of the article also studied changes in the composition of enamel induced by the development of caries. Using this information, they determined the exact ratio of the components of hard tissues of a healthy tooth and created a material of a similar composition. The material could be used to restore the structure of teeth at the early stages of caries.

The scientists believe that with the help of the biomaterial caries could be treated at the initial stages without the need to perform a hard tissues preparation.
