We have found 37 burials, most of them belong to the beginning of our era … In the area of the burial ground several more burial mounds were discovered, where there were burials of an even earlier time, of the Bronze Age, which are about four thousand years old,» Prokofieva said.

Degradation of submarine permafrost can lead to accidents during oil extraction, scientists believe

The degradation of the submarine permafrost beneath the seas of the Eastern Arctic can lead to serious industrial accidents during the exploration and extraction of mineral resources in the Arctic shelf. These conclusions were made by Russian scientists who are studying greenhouse gas emissions in the course of the scientific expedition to the Arctic, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia informed.

«The scientists suggest that with the progressive degradation of submarine permafrost, methane emissions from the seas of the Eastern Arctic may have a significant impact on the climate system of the entire planet,» the message said.

«Regarding the preliminary results already obtained on this expedition, we can say with confidence that most of the studied seeps (a seep is a fountain of floating up methane bubbles) have significantly increased in size compared with results of the last observations made by the expeditions of 2014 and 2016.

«The task that had been set at the level of a state program was to obtain a material that is operable at temperatures of up to 1400 degrees Celsius. To solve the set task, our team developed a method using which we could, right during the process of synthesis, define the structure of powder materials consisting of a metallic or intermetallic matrix, within which refractory ceramic particles are distributed. Simply put, each particle of such powder is a very small metal ball, less than a tenth of a millimetre in diameter, and inside it even smaller ceramic particles are distributed,» Vladimir Promahov, an expert at the Laboratory of High Energy Systems and New Technologies of TSU is quoted in the message as saying.
