It was reported earlier that the Sevastopol authorities had decided to transfer the complex of buildings of the former Corrosion Station situated on the North side of the city to the Kurchatov Institute. The station was engaged in R&D in the field of studying the corrosion of metal during the Soviet period, but later ceased to exist. Kurchatov Institute approached the Sevastopol authorities with a proposal to restore the station.

Among the problems that the future Sevastopol branch of the institute might address, Kovalchuk named the issues of protecting ships' hulls from fouling, and the creation of one of the Russian climate stations in Sevastopol.
