Scientists described a previously unknown species of ancient sharks with twenty-element teeth

Scientists from Russia and Belarus described a previously unknown species of ancient sharks with teeth which have more than twenty cusps and a branched system of intra-teeth channels. Geologists have found the teeth on the territory of Belarus back in the 1970s, but they were unable to study them until now, TASS reported on Tuesday.

Associate professor of the Belarusian National Technical University Dmitry Plaks took part in the research. The teeth of ancient sharks were examined with microtomograph at the Science Park of St. Petersburg State University. «The described new species of the [ancient] sharks had unique multi-cuspal teeth, the like of which have not yet been found in any other ancient shark,» said Alexander Ivanov, an associate professor at St. Petersburg State University. Each of the three examined teeth has four main cusps and there are more than twenty in total, the scientists calculated.

Modern fish and skates do not have such teeth, which means that the ancient sharks ate as yet unknown food, which is not available these days, the researcher said.
