Tomsk researchers plan to obtain novel antibiotics from Siberian plants

The scientists-phytochemists from Tomsk State University (TSU) have started to investigate the usage of plants growing in Siberia as an origin of phytoantibiotics which might be applied as the sources of antimicrobial preparations. The news has been reported by the press-office of TSU.

The peculiarity of such medications is that they cause much fewer side effects if compared to the action of synthetic drugs. For pathogens, it is much more complicated to elaborate the resistance against the action of complex phytopreparations than of the chemical ones.

The studies have already shown that plant-based medication might be more efficient. For example, high antifungal activity of plant fireballs has been discovered. According to the results of the analysis, its activity by more than 30 times outperforms the action of antifungus antibiotics used now in medicine.
