The first Russian device for the accurate measurement of deformations in «space environment» created
Scientists from the Kirensky Institute of Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed an apparatus to study the properties of materials at temperatures close to absolute zero. Such a «dilatometer» will help research the behaviour of carbon plastics, adhesives and metal parts, which are used to create extraterrestrial devices, such as the space observatory «Millimetron». The corresponding article is published in Technical Physics Letters.
The device created as a part of the space project can be used not just in outside space. It makes it possible to study multiferroics — materials that change their properties under the influence of magnetic and electric fields. Such materials could theoretically be used to make highly sensitive sensors of an alternating magnetic field, and SHF-generators and filters.
