A chess piece with a concealed compartment has been found in the Moscow museums archives
The figure looked like a single whole from the outside, Yemelyanov explained, and it was difficult to guess that it actually consists of several parts. The last year’s experience helped researchers reveal the secret. In April 2017, Moscow archaeologists discovered a treasure trove dated to the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It happened during the work on Prechistenskaya street.
The hoard, which was found last year, consisted of 10 coins minted in the period from 1533 to 1538. All the coins were hidden inside a hollow chess piece, which consisted of three parts with threaded connections.
